Reigning and defending World Open champion Judd Trump is now on a 16-match winning streak in the competition after progressing to the round of 32 in China.

World number one Trump - who has won the last two editions of the World Open - defeated home soil cueist Long Zehuang 5-1 to reach Tuesday’s round three at the Yushan Sports Centre where he will play Joe O’Connor.

A semi-finalist at the Wuhan Open earlier this season, Long took the opening frame with the help of a 62 break, but current UK Champion Trump impressively strung together five consecutive frames, compiling runs of 108, 121 and 101 in the process.

The five-frame burst shut out world number 60 Long, who scored a total of just seven points during that period.

Trump’s hat-trick of century breaks during the tie means his seasonal ton tally advances to 79, and he remains on course to collect a £100,000 bonus later this season as the first person to reach 100 100s for the campaign.

Should Trump hit three-figures at some point during this 2024/25 term, it will be only the third time in professional snooker history that the feat has been achieved after Neil Robertson in 2013/14 and Trump himself in 2019/20.

Heavy scoring already seems to be a theme this week with a plethora of century breaks already having been registered. This has been the case for several Chinese events in recent times.

During the morning session in the Far East, Shaun Murphy compiled the 10th maximum 147 break of his career during a 5-0 whitewash over wildcard Zhou Jinhao. Masters Champion Murphy hit two other tons earlier on - his first of the match representing the 700th of his professional career.

All the remaining round two (last 64) matches were completed on Monday, and the biggest name to exit the competition was world number seven and former two-time winner of this title Mark Allen who was ousted by David Lilley, 5-4.

Allen fashioned a 142 break in the opening frame, but there was never more than a frame between the two contestants. Lilley crafted a crucial 77 break in the decider as he picked up a big win in his battle for tour survival.

Reigning World Champion Kyren Wilson proceeded to the last 32 after a 5-1 victory over Scottish Open Champion Lei Peifan. Wilson won the opening frame with a 138 and also made a 111 in frame five.

World number 95 Duane Jones produced a massive comeback as he stunned world number 16 Xiao Guodong.

Wuhan Open Champion Xiao went into the mid-session interval of their encounter in complete control at 4-0 up, but on resumption, Jones claimed five successive frames to record a brilliant 5-4 victory.

In the deciding frame, Jones came to the table 53 points behind before constructing a classy and cool counter clearance of 56 to take it on the final black.
