The main venue stages of the 2025 World Open - this season's final event in mainland China - got underway on Sunday in Yushan, and there were contrasting fortunes for the top 16 players on show.

There was no such drama for reigning and defending champion Judd Trump, though, as he whitewashed Xing Zihao 5-0 in his held over first round match.

World number one Trump made breaks of 100 and 111 in consecutive frames during his emphatic victory, a result that pushes him to a 15-match winning streak in the tournament having won the last two editions of it in 2019 and 2024.

World Champion Kyren Wilson also fashioned a brace of century breaks (100, 119) in a 5-2 win over Hammad Miah, as did home hero Ding Junhui (141, 130) as he eliminated Jiang Jun, 5-1. Along with Trump, both Wilson and Ding move to the last 64 and will be back in action on Monday.

The biggest upset of the opening day in the Far East arrived when the in-form Mark Selby was sent out of the competition by world number 61 Liu Hongyu, 5-2.

Selby travelled to China having won the last two professionals events, and despite a run of 141 in frame three from the Leicester cueman, it was home soil player Liu who advanced to the last 32 with the help of breaks of 104 and 102.

Another big name to be shown the exit early on was world number 10 Zhang Anda who was defeated 5-3 by Stan Moody; the teenager crafting a 123 during the first round tie.

Elsewhere in the 14th ranking event of the season, top 16ers John Higgins and Ali Carter both advanced to the last 32; Higgins did so with a brace of tons.

Zhou Yuelong - who has had a quiet campaign, so far - compiled a hat-trick of tons (105, 101, 126) as he too reached round three. Going through to that stage as well were Elliot Slessor (breaks of 117 and 121), Jimmy Robertson, Aaron Hill, Michael Holt, Antoni Kowalski (133), and Wu Yize. The latter name ousted Jackson Page 5-4 with an effort of 102 in the deciding frame.

The remaining round one fixtures were completed on Monday as David Lilley, Scott Donaldson and Xu Si won their matches against local wildcard opposition, but it wasn't a clean sweep for all the professionals against the amateur invitees as Zhou Jinhao (119) defeated Sanderson Lam, 5-1.

Stuart Carrington (111, 116) was the other first round winner on Sunday as he navigated Ronnie O'Sullivan's replacement in the draw, Daniel Womersley, with a 5-2 win.

Round two (last 64) will be concluded on Monday at the Yushan Sport Centre.
