It’s quarter-finals day at the 2024 Wuhan Open as we move closer to discovering the identity of this year’s champion and recipient of the £140,000 top prize.

From the eight remaining contestants, half are English and the other half are competing on home soil in China. One of the latter is world number 70 Long Zehuang who has broken new personal ground this week by reaching the first ranking event quarter-final of his career.

The second season professional recovered from 4-1 down to oust Mark Selby, 5-4, in the qualifying round back in July, and he also came back from 3-1 down to deny Ben Woollaston, 5-3, in the last 16 on Wednesday.

Jack Lisowski has been super impressive in the Far East during this campaign as he chases that illusive maiden ranking event title.

Six times a runner-up in a ranking tournament, Lisowski has dropped just two frames in three matches over the past few days and totted up five century breaks in the process along with a plethora of other sizeable contributions.

It will be the first time that Long and Lisowski have played each other in professional competition.

Elsewhere in the morning session, Shaun Murphy versus Xiao Guodong is a quarter-final rerun of their meeting at the Saudi Arabia Snooker Masters from a few weeks ago. On that occasion, Murphy came away with the ‘w’ in a 6-2 verdict.

During the evening’s programme, world number one Judd Trump continues his Wuhan Open title defence against Chris Wakelin.

Trump - who has now won 28 of his last 30 professional matches in China - has relinquished just seven frames in four matches in these televised stages.

The career head-to-head stats between Trump and Wakelin makes very pretty reading for the former, as he holds a 100% winning record of 13-0. However, Wakelin is in great form having made three successive total clearances during a 5-3 win over Ding Junhui in the last 16.

The final last eight encounter is an all-Chinese top 16 clash between Zhang Anda and Si Jiahui.

International Championship title holder Zhang survived a thrilling climax to his match on Wednesday, ousting Mark Joyce, 5-4, on a re-spotted black in the deciding frame.

Si has lost only five frames in his three matches this week, so far.

Zhang enjoys a 3-0 career head-to-head record over his compatriot, along with a dominant 13-3 frame aggregate score. However, Si is now a fellow elite bracket cueist and a true contender for trophyware on the World Snooker Tour.
