Thrilling race for 2026 UK Snooker Championship automatic qualification to reach conclusion
The race to secure automatic qualification for the 2026 UK Snooker Championship is coming to a thrilling close with several players still in the mix.
This year's UK Championship will be celebrating its 50th annual edition; the Republic of Ireland's Patsy Fagan won the inaugural staging in 1977.

The first Triple Crown event of the season, the main draw, televised stages of the £1.5 million world ranking tournament are scheduled to take place at the Barbican in York between November 27 to December 6.
How does the draw work for the 2026 UK Snooker Championship?
In total, 144 players will feature in the 2026 UK Championship. The top 16 seeds go straight through to the 32-player final rounds in York, but all the other contestants must attend the qualifying gauntlet being held at the Mattioli Arena in Leicester between November 21-26.
There will be four rounds at these qualifiers, with the lowest seeded players starting at the first hurdle, and those placed 17 to 48 coming in at round three, meaning they require to win two matches to book a Barbican berth. 16 qualifiers will emerge, and they'll be randomly drawn against the top 16 seeds in round one proper.
How to and who will be a top 16 seed player in York?
Seeding positions will be confirmed as per the world rankings after the 2026 International Championship - the final ranking event before the UK.
As the reigning UK Champion, Mark Selby is guaranteed to be the number one seed, and current World Champion Wu Yize will be number two. From seed position three, it will go as per the world rankings list.
With the International Championship in Nanjing, China carrying a £175,000 winner's purse, all the way down to 32nd-placed Hossein Vafaei on the provisional rankings could climb into the top 16, become a seed for York and avoid the bother of qualifying.
If my calculations are correct, the top 14 on the projected list - down to Xiao Guodong in 14th - are already safe, and will be seeds at the Barbican, so everyone else is chasing two available spots.
First to talk about is Ding Junhui. The three-time UK Champion is currently 15th in the world rankings, but he is defending a whopping £175,000 at the International Championship - having won the 2024 title - from his rolling two-year total.
As a consequence, Ding has to at least reach the final in Nanjing to preserve his top 16 status.
On the projected list, Ali Carter is 15th and Jak Jones is 16th. Carter can't add to his amount as he was surprisingly defeated by Anton Kazakov in qualifying several weeks ago, but recent Northern Ireland Open runner-up Jones has made it.
Carter is on £405,400 - nearly £50,000 ahead of 17th-placed Zhou Yuelong - therefore the only way he can fall outside the 16 is if two cueists below him (very close to him) in the standings contest the final. A very unlikely scenario.
The UK Championship seeding race will mainly revolve around the 16th and final place. On the provisionals, this is currently occupied by Jones who has £363,900 (this includes the £5,000 he has earned for winning his qualifying match).

Jones is just £5,200 ahead of Zhou (£358,700) who has also qualified. Only a few grand behind Zhou is Wuhan Open champion Chang Bingyu (£355,200) in 18th.
As mentioned earlier, Vafaei (£238,450) could jump from 32nd all the way into the 16 with the title in the Far East early next month.
Two players who aren't in the running are Jack Lisowski and Elliot Slessor who were both eliminated in qualifying.
The qualification race for the 2027 Masters
The 2027 Masters scheduled to be held at the Alexandra Palace in London in mid-January may seem far in the distance, but there are only two more ranking events until the full 16-player line-up is confirmed - the International Championship and the UK Championship.
The top 16 players in the world rankings after the UK Championship will all earn tickets to snooker's most prestigious invitational event.
With the final qualifying event the UK Championship reserving a prize of £312,500 for the title winner, the picture could also dramatically change in that particular race.
