Fourteen-year-old Michal Szubarczyk qualifies for Xi'an Grand Prix

Snooker's youngest-ever professional Michal Szubarczyk ousted former ranking event finalist Martin O'Donnell, 5-4, to qualify for the main venue, televised stages of the 2025 Xi'an Grand Prix.

Szubarczyk - a 14-year-old from Poland - is a rookie on the World Snooker Tour. The youngster earned promotion to the sport's top flight earlier this year when he reached the final of the open-age European Amateur Championship in Türkiye.

At the Mattioli Arena in Leicester on Monday night, Szubarczyk took the opening two frames of his qualification tie before an effort of 95 - narrowly missing out on his first top tier ton - put him in firm control at 3-0 up.

World number 43 O'Donnell got on the board with frame four, but after the mid-session interval Szubarczyk registered a run of 84 as he moved 4-1 ahead and one frame away from progression in the £850,000 world ranking event.

However, O'Donnell - the 2024 Welsh Open runner-up - battled back with three consecutive frames (71 break, frame seven) to force a decider.

Despite the momentum being with his opponent, though, current European under-16 and under-18 champion Szubarczyk was not to be denied a spot in the Far East this October as a break of 52 in the final frame helped him to victory.

In the round of 64 in China, Szubarczyk will face Thailand's Noppon Saengkham who capped off a 5-2 win over Alexander Ursenbacher with a run of 107.

Szubarczyk has now won three of his last four matches on the professional circuit. At last month's Saudi Arabia Masters in Jeddah, the teenager eliminated Ryan Davies and Bulcsu Revesz in the opening two rounds before being stopped by 2015 World Champion Stuart Bingham.

Elsewhere on the opening day of Xi'an qualifying, Mark Selby scored two centuries in a 5-0 whitewash of Gong Chenzhi.

In contrast, former world number one Mark Allen's qualification route was a lot more stressful as he squeezed past Mitchell Mann, 5-4.

Allen - a semi-finalist at the Wuhan Open last week - racked up breaks of 79, 54 and 66 en route to a 4-2 lead, but Mann (91 break, frame two) left his opponent pointless in frames seven and eight as contributions of 72 and 79 took the contest all the way.

But Allen was able to follow up his good sequence in Wuhan with success in Leicester, going through to round two after a 73 break.

In his home city, Louis Heathcote defeated reigning Scottish Open Champion Lei Peifan, 5-3.

Heathcote was in command at 4-0 up, but Lei rallied with a trio of frames to reduce his deficit to just one. However, Heathcote ended the contest in style with a break of 135 in frame eight.

A two-time ranking event runner-up last season, Wu Yize also crafted a 135 in his 5-4 win over rookie Florian Nuessle.

Former Crucible finalist Jak Jones was in brilliant nick as he chalked up breaks of 91, 74, 98, 68 and 53 in a 5-0 whitewash of Haydon Pinhey.

David Grace - who was 4-0 ahead - shaded Anthony McGill, 5-4.

Yuan Sijun, Oliver Lines, Xu Si (123 break), Long Zehuang (105), Robbie Williams, Yao Pengcheng (137), Joe O'Connor, David Lilley, Robert Milkins, Fan Zhengyi, Ricky Walden, Ali Carter, and David Gilbert (100) were the other winners on Monday in Leicester.
