Wakelin won the next two frames to go on the hill before Thor forced a decider. However, a run of 87 in frame nine secured Wakelin's path to the Far East.
Joe Perry top scored with a 102 as he whitewashed former World Women's Snooker Champion Mink Nutcharut, 5-0.
The current holder of women snooker's premier prize Bai Yulu made her debut as a professional player. The 21-year-old from China won the opening frame against compatriot Yuan Sijun, but was eliminated 5-1. Yuan crafted a break of 113 in frame three.
There were 5-0 clean sweeps for Tian Pengfei and Elliot Slessor over Farakh Ajaib and Manasawin Phetmalaikul, respectively.
Xu Si edged fellow countryman Jiang Jun 5-4, while 17-year-old Gong Chenzhi pipped 54-year-old Anthony Hamilton by the same result.
