World number one Judd Trump exits as Wuhan Open quarter-final line-up confirmed

Three-time ranking event champion Gary Wilson scored a big win as he ousted world number one Judd Trump, 5-4, to reach the quarter-finals of the 2025 Wuhan Open.

Wilson’s deciding frame victory over his fellow Englishman puts him into the last eight of a professional tournament for the first time since last November. It also ends his five-match losing streak to Trump on the circuit.

There was never more than a frame between the two with Trump leading by a single frame on four separate occasions before Wilson took the front when it mattered most.

Breaks of 68 and 57 helped UK Champion Trump lead twice early on but Wilson replied with efforts of 104 and 82 as they went into the mid-session interval locked at 2-2.

On resumption, the pattern continued as Trump edged back in front (58 break), Wilson restored parity, and then Trump reached the hill first at 4-3 up.

However, needing to win consecutive frames for the first time by either player during the contest, former back-to-back Scottish Open champion Wilson did just that to eliminate the winner of this competition from two years ago.

Next up for Wilson in Thursday's quarter-finals is John Higgins who registered runs of 73 and 55 in a 5-1 victory over Tom Ford.

World number six Higgins lost his opening match at both the recent Shanghai Masters and Saudi Arabia Masters events, but he remains on course for consecutive ranking event titles in China having won the World Open in Yushan in March.

50-year-olds Higgins and Mark Williams are both in the quarter-finals. If either of them lift the trophy and collect the £140,000 first prize later this week, they will become the oldest ranking event champion in professional snooker history. It’s possible they could meet in the final, as they are in opposite halves of the draw.

Mark Allen is into his first quarter-final this calendar year after dismissing maximum man Thepchaiya Un-Nooh, 5-1.

Allen had to win the final two frames of his last 32 match to squeeze past Hossein Vafaei, but the Northern Irishman was a lot more comfortable here as breaks of 65, 94, 78 and 84 put him through.

At the start of last season, Allen was ranked number one in the world for the first time in his career, but it has been a largely frustrating time for him since then, and on the end-of-season provisional ranking list he is currently positioned outside the top 16.

2025 Wuhan Open quarter-final line-up:

07:00BST session

  • Xiao Guodong v Stan Moody
  • Mark Williams v Zhang Anda

12:30BST session

  • Gary Wilson v John Higgins
  • Mark Allen v Si Jiahui

World number 15 Si Jiahui will be Allen’s next opponent after last year’s runner-up in this event defeated Stephen Maguire, 5-2.

23-year-old Si fashioned breaks of 127 and 113 early on before establishing a 4-1 lead.

Recent Championship League winner Maguire kept the encounter going with an effort of 120 in frame six, but Si came from behind in frame seven to book a place in the last eight.

The quarter-final ties from the top half of the draw are defending champion Xiao Guodong against teenager Stan Moody, and Williams versus one of three Chinese players left in - Zhang Anda.
