Jimmy White's latest Crucible bid is over after World Championship qualifying round defeat

World Snooker Tour
Jimmy White’s World Snooker Championship dream is over for another year, as he bowed out of this year’s blue riband event following a 10-6 second qualifying round defeat to fellow Englishman Ashley Carty.

Six-times world finalist White was competing in his 45th World Championship campaign. Starting out in the opening qualifying round - meaning he needed to win four consecutive matches at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield to reach the main draw at the Crucible - the 62-year-old began his title tilt with a post 1am, 10-9 victory over Ukraine’s Anton Kazakov earlier in the week.

White faced a step up in opposition on Friday, coming up against world number 71 Carty, who qualified for the Crucible in 2020.

Twenty-nine-year-old Carty took three of the opening four frames to go into the first mid-session interval 3-1 up.

On resumption, breaks of 76 and 58 helped him to frames five and six, before he deposited his fifth frame in-a-row to establish a commanding 6-1 lead.

However, White clung on, ending the morning session on a high by taking the final two frames - aided by runs of 50 and 69 - to reduces his arrears to three at 6-3 down.

Several hours later in the evening, Carty crafted efforts of 103 and 60 as he re-opened four-frame buffers at 7-3 and 8-4, but White responded by getting a frame back each time - hitting an 89 in frame 13 to make it 8-5 going into the final mid-session interval.

After the break, though, Carty took the next two frames to reach the target and put an end to his opponent’s hopes.

It is a big win for Carty, who is battling to retain his professional status at the end of this event. Currently he is outside of the top 64 and the top four on the one-year-list (for players outside the top 64), and if he were to stay below both cut-offs, he would need to attend Q School in order to try and earn a tour card for next season.

Next up for Carty is China’s Pang Junxu in the penultimate qualifying round; world number 27 Pang has made it to the Crucible in each of the past two years.

As for White, he will now prepare for media duties with TNT Sports throughout the Crucible stages which take place between April 19 to May 5.

The ten-time ranking event winner and former Masters champion finishes the season well outside the qualification places for next season’s professional roster.

Should he wish to continue playing on snooker’s top tier - White has expressed no desire to retire just yet - then he will hoping to receive another invitational tour card from the sport’s authorities, which seems likely given his career achievements and influence.

White was trying to get his name in the 32-player main draw for the first time since 2006, although the Londoner can still look forward to a playing engagement at the Crucible in the near future, as he is in the draw for the 2025 World Seniors Snooker Championship - an event he has won a record four times - which follows the professional version.

Hamilton denies Hallworth in extraordinary climax

Elsewhere in Sheffield on Friday, Anthony Hamilton defeated Steven Hallworth 10-8 to keep alive his World Championship and tour survival hopes - but that doesn’t tell the story.

Former German Masters champion Hamilton - who has been an ever-present on the professional circuit since 1991 - was seemingly coasting into the penultimate qualifying round as breaks of 54, 53, 87, 71 and 63 helped him record a 9-0 first session whitewash.

However, recent Global Q Tour Playoff winner Hallworth avoided a complete clean sweep by taking the first frame of the evening session, and began to make the scoreline respectable before later mounting a serious comeback charge.

Hallworth strung together eight consecutive frames - aided by four half-centuries - and one of the most extraordinary recoveries in professional snooker was on.

It looked like the match was heading to a decider as Hallworth led by 63 points in frame 18, but Hamilton - under huge pressure - somehow managed to conjure up a remarkable counter clearance of 69 to win the frame on the final black.

18-year-old Stan Moody fashioned two century breaks on his way to a 10-3 victory over Dean Young. Moody - who is aiming to reach the Crucible for the first time - plays Jimmy Robertson next.

Ukrainian teenager Iulian Boiko ousted Louis Heathcote, 10-9, while Robbie Williams, Allan Taylor, Michael Holt and Jamie Jones also advanced to qualifying round three.
