2024 Shanghai Masters snooker: Judd Trump wins Shanghai crown for the first time

Judd Trump added a new title to his already glittering career CV as he defeated Shaun Murphy 11-5 in the final to win the 2024 Shanghai Masters.

The prestigious accolade was one of only a few prizes still missing from the 34-year-old's trophy collection having been runner-up in 2012, 2015 and 2017, but Trump set that record straight as he pocketed the £210,000 winner's kitty at the Shanghai Indoor Stadium.

His first competitive outing of the 2024/25 season, world number two Trump dropped only 12 frames in four matches and notched up a total of ten century breaks - a new record for the tournament. This latest success represents his sixth World Snooker Tour title within the space of just nine-and-a-half months.

Trump did the main bulk of damage during the afternoon session as he took firm control of the tie. He went 2-0 up before Murphy got on the board with an 89 break in frame three whilst on a maximum attempt before missing a tricky pot on the 12th black.

Frame four was a dramatic one as Murphy aimed to successfully counter but he was unable to develop the final blue that was near a cushion. He later played a poor safety shot and Trump sank the blue at long range before slotting home the pink to go 3-1 ahead at the mid-session interval.

After the break, Murphy continued to struggle as he failed to pot a very simple red - another unexpected miss with the rest - allowing Trump an opportunity which he took with a run of 100.

28-time ranking event winner Trump extended his advantage with a scrappy 30-minute plus frame six before crafting a 122 in the next after his opponent had been unlucky going in-off whilst potting the opening red.

Trump also deposited frame eight to move in front 7-1 but Murphy stopped the rot in the next and finished the session on a high as he produced an effort of 132 to close the afternoon four behind at 7-3.

‘The Magician’ - runner-up in this event in 2019 - was hoping to repeat his similar comeback heroics from his semi-final victory over Mark Selby, but on resumption a few hours later, he didn’t capitalise on any of three openings in frame 11 and uncharacteristically punched the table in frustration.

Breaks of 61, 86 and an incredibly intricate 114 helped put Trump on the brink at 10-3 - and despite a gallant Murphy making century breaks either side of the final mid-session interval to make the scoreline closer - ‘The Ace in the Pack’ completed the win and tasted Shanghai success for the first time with frame 16.
