In a match which featured only two half-century breaks, recent Shanghai Masters amateur tournament runner-up Cao top scored with a 62 as he set up a last 16 meeting with Mark Selby.
Over on the other table, we had the first deciding frame of this year's competition as Pang Junxu ousted Gary Wilson, 6-5.
Scottish Open and Welsh Open champion Wilson registered runs of 85, 103 and 109 during the tie, but ranking event finalist Pang (breaks of 76 in frame one and 74 in frame ten) took the final two frames to schedule a date with World Number One Mark Allen.
Round two (last 16) began in the afternoon session and defending champion Ronnie O’Sullivan was the first player through to the last eight as he stopped teenage wildcard Zhou Jinhao, 6-1. Full report here.

On the other table, Si Jiahui defeated Luca Brecel 6-2 in what was their first meeting since that memorable Crucible semi-final just over 14 months ago.
Si won the opening frame with the aid of a 70 but former World Champion Brecel levelled with an 87 and then took frame three to lead. However, Si squared proceedings at 2-2 going into the mid-session interval before compiling a four-frame burst on resumption along with efforts of 70, 55, 77 and 60.
The 22-year-old Chinese cueist will play England’s Judd Trump on Thursday as the three-time finalist in this tournament ended Mark Williams' hopes in the evening session.
His first competitive outing this season, 28-time ranking event winner Trump crafted breaks of 72, 52, 67 and 112 twice in a 6-2 victory.

The final match to finish at the Shanghai Indoor Stadium went all the way as home hero Ding Junhui resisted a resilient Ali Carter.
Recent Championship League winner Carter claimed the opening frame (61 break) but Ding strung together the next four (79 break, frame five).
Carter, though, won the next two frames (100 break, frame seven) to close the gap to one, and although a 53 helped opponent Ding win the eighth and move 5-3 up, contributions of 107 and 69 assisted the 2010 champion to force a deciding frame.
However, Ding - roared on by enthusiastic home support - slotted home a long-range red at the start of frame 11 and went on to make a match-winning break of 95.
