Colossal comeback from home hero Tom Ford to qualify for China Open
Tom Ford produced a remarkable comeback to deny opponent Liam Highfield on the final black ball and qualify for the main draw of the 2026 China Open.
Former Shoot Out champion Ford - playing on home soil at the Mattioli Arena in Leicester - recovered from 5-0 down, winning six consecutive frames to score a headline comeback victory.

At the end of last season, Highfield navigated all four rounds of qualifying to reach the main draw of the 2026 World Snooker Championship at the Crucible Theatre where he made then-defending champion Zhao Xintong sweat on the opening day.
The Stoke-on-Trent cueist brought that brilliant form into this new campaign, defeating Florian Nuessle 6-2 and then former China Open champion Stephen Maguire 6-1 in his opening two qualifying assignments.
And it looked as if 35-year-old Highfield was going to breeze through to this August’s televised stages when he went 5-0 up on Ford in the final qualifying round.
However, Ford - who defeated Lyu Haotian, 6-3, in the penultimate qualifying round - had other ideas.
The world number 36 avoided the whitewash with a break of 100 in frame six before compiling back-to-back centuries with a 101 in the next. Ford made it three-in-a-row, then four, then five, as a run of 94 saw him restore parity at 5-5 and force a very unlikely deciding frame.
However, it was looking like Ford's efforts were going to be in vain, as Highfield took control in the decider before his stay at the table ended whilst on an effort of 53.
Ford got back into it, and ultimately the contest was resolved on the colours. Highfield potted the yellow, but it was Ford who cleared from green to black to complete an incredible recovery triumph.
Bingham whitewashes Brecel in clash of Crucible champions
All 16 of Sunday's match winners at the Mattioli go through to the main draw, televised stages of the revived China Open which take place in Taiyuan between August 8-16. The world's top 16 automatically went straight through to those final rounds.
Elsewhere during the morning session in Leicester, Stuart Bingham booked his Far East berth as he whitewashed fellow former world champion Luca Brecel, 6-0.
Crucible king in 2015, Bingham was impressive early on, constructing breaks of 56, 104 and 68 in establishing a 3-0 lead before going on to register an unexpected clean sweep.
For Brecel - who scored a morale-boosting 6-5 win over Jamie Clarke in the previous round - it was a day to forget as he struggled to get going.
Hossein Vafaei ended last season on a high by reaching the quarter-finals of the World Championship for the first time before bowing out to eventual champion Wu Yize, and the Iranian number one has immediately qualified for another lucrative event on the World Snooker Tour.
Vafaei eliminated Marco Fu on Friday evening, and at the final hurdle a couple of days later he racked up runs of 126 and 132 in defeating David Lilley, 6-1.
Another player who crafted a brace of centuries during victory was Welsh youngster Jackson Page as he contributed with 107 and 123 in a 6-3 success over Yuan Sijun.
Noppon Saengkham saw off Elliot Slessor 6-1, Anthony McGill got the better of Joe O’Connor 6-2, and Zhang Anda denied Daniel Wells, 6-5.
The final result from the morning session in Leicester involved Essex cuemen Ali Carter and Matthew Selt.
Carter twice led early on, but efforts of 97 and 102 helped Selt level on both occasions. Selt went in front for the first time after the mid-session interval before Carter levelled, then made a 133 to nudge 4-3 up.
Momentum shifted again as Selt pieced together back-to-back frames himself; Carter took the contest all the way, but it was Indian Open winner and current world number 43 Selt who got across the line.
The eight remaining final qualifying round ties take place on Sunday afternoon/early evening at the Mattioli Arena.
