The staggering stat that highlights Ronnie O'Sullivan's unmatched success across snooker's major events

Widely acknowledged as the greatest snooker player of all time, another statistic has recently emerged that perhaps further underlines Ronnie O’Sullivan’s unprecedented career longevity and success across the sport’s biggest events.

The youngest and oldest UK Champion in history - those triumphs coming thirty years apart (1993-2023) - O’Sullivan is aiming for a record-extending ninth title at professional snooker’s second-most prestigious ranking event.

‘The Rocket’ - who is set to celebrate his 50th birthday during the competition on December 5th - begins his 2025 UK Championship campaign against qualifier Zhou Yuelong on the afternoon of Tuesday 2nd December.

Number six seed O’Sullivan goes into the tournament having not won a trophy on the professional circuit since March 2024, questions being asked about his desire, and with £250,000 to defend on his ranking total, but he is still a serious contender.

O’Sullivan’s eight-trophy haul from the UK Championship down the years puts him two clear of six-time winner Steve Davis and three ahead of five-time champion Stephen Hendry on that all-time list.

From the top 11 seeds at this year’s edition, 10 have won the title before, although no-one has claimed half the amount of UK crowns that O’Sullivan has.

Snooker’s three biggest events - the UK Championship, Masters, World Championship - these days are collectively known as the ‘Triple Crown Series’. Across this Series, O’Sullivan has amassed 23 titles, consisting of eight UK, eight Masters, and seven World Championship titles.

On this particular list, O’Sullivan leads second-placed Hendry (18) - who like him is a seven-time world champion - and third-placed Davis (15).

Comparing his overall Triple Crown collection to his ‘Class of 92’ contemporaries, O’Sullivan comfortably has more titles than both John Higgins (9) and Mark Williams (7) combined.

Who has won the most Triple Crown matches in total?

On a recent episode of the popular Snooker Scene Podcast presented by esteemed snooker journalist, broadcaster and commentator Dave Hendon, another measure of O’Sullivan’s unequalled success across these major events has been revealed.

Before a ball was struck at this year’s UK Championship (including qualifiers), there was a list of 22 cueists - involving past and current professional players - who have won at least 100 Triple Crown matches across their career. This list takes into account matches won at the qualifying rounds of the UK and World Championships.

Outside the top ten players who have the most wins were Mark Allen (101 wins), Judd Trump (110), Neil Robertson (119), and Stuart Bingham (120).

In joint-ninth on the all-time standings were Matthew Stevens and Shaun Murphy, with Mark Selby on eighth with 133 wins. Then was Stephen Maguire in seventh and Mark Williams in sixth.

Former Masters and UK Champion, and six-time World Championship finalist, Jimmy White makes the top five with 170. Steve Davis is in fourth with 184, and John Higgins was third with 184.

Stephen Hendry - who for many years held several records in the sport that O’Sullivan has since broken - sits in second with exactly 200 match victories.

Unsurprisingly, O’Sullivan is top of this list, and by some considerable margin, with 258 wins to his name. 94 have come from the World Championship, 102 from the UK Championship, and 62 at the Masters.

One hundred wins separated 22nd to 2nd on the list, but 58 were between 2nd and 1st.

Of course, there are factors to consider when analysing these totals, such as the length of their careers - a match win percentage would be interesting - but O’Sullivan’s tally is quite amazing, and he could yet have many more wins to add.

The information above is correct at the time of writing before the 2025 UK Championship.
